The first train on a new rail service for Swedish timber producer Fiskarheden has departed from Malungsfors bound for the Port of Gothenburg, carrying sawn timber destined for markets in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. The service departs every other Monday, carrying 44 forty-foot containers per departure, with capacity to expand if demand grows. Fiskarheden exports approximately 90 percent of its production, with sawn timber used across furniture, construction and concrete formwork applications. The new rail connection, developed by TFK Logistics, provides a cost-effective and flexible route to international shipping via Gothenburg and is open to other companies in the Dalarna region as well as Fiskarheden. CEO Joakim Limberg described the return to rail freight at the Port of Gothenburg as a positive development aligned with the company’s ambition to move as much inland freight as possible by rail. He also highlighted the opportunity to fill containers with imported goods on the return journey from Gothenburg to Dalarna, noting active discussions with regional businesses about bidirectional shipments that would further increase the service’s value to local operators. Richard Mellgren, Senior Business Development Manager at the Port of Gothenburg, described the service as a good example of what Railport Scandinavia can offer inland exporters seeking efficient access to international shipping routes.
