Image Credit: Enilive Energy company Eni and cruise operator MSC Cruises said they have completed a trial using Enilive’s HVO marine biofuel onboard the cruise ship MSC Opera . During the test, one engine on MSC Opera operated for around 2,000 hours using pure HVO or HVO100 , Eni said in an email statement on Tuesday . Performance and emissions data were monitored during the trial. The companies said the test confirmed the technical feasibility of using pure HVO in marine engines while maintaining performance comparable to conventional marine fuels. According to the results, NOx emissions were reduced by 16% , while greenhouse gas emissions fell by around 80% compared with traditional marine fuel. Engine maker Wartsila supported the assessment, while Bureau Veritas acted as an independent certifier for the trial. Biofuel blends can be used as a drop-in fuel, allowing existing fleet to reduce emissions without requiring any modifications.  “The trial with MSC has demonstrated how HVO diesel biofuel can contribute immediately to the decarbonization of maritime transport,” Stefano Ballista , CEO of Enilive, said.
