Malaysian provider of subsea digital infrastructure solutions OMS Group has moved to expand its fleet of fibre optic cable-laying vessels with a series of newbuilds at Dutch builder Royal IHC. The Kuala Lumpur-based outfit, backed by US investment firm KKR, will see the first vessel delivered in 2027, outfitted with a cutting-edge fibre optic plough and launch and recovery system (LARS) system. In September, OMS set aside $300m for investments to expand its submarine cable systems and terrestrial infrastructure, following KKR’s $400m investment in October 2023. The company currently lists a fleet of five cable layers and a pair of cable lay barges on its website, together with three AHTS vessels and one chartered in OSV.
