Trump warns EU on trade deal deadline ahead of July 4th in World Economy News 09/05/2026 President Donald Trump issued a warning to the European Union on Thursday regarding the implementation of a trade agreement reached last year at his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. Trump stated he spoke with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen about multiple issues, including their shared position that Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons. The call also addressed the trade deal signed at Turnberry, which Trump described as the largest trade agreement ever negotiated. According to Trump, the EU promised to eliminate tariffs to zero as part of the agreement. He said he has given von der Leyen until America’s 250th birthday on July 4th to fulfill the EU’s commitments, warning that failure to do so would result in tariffs jumping to significantly higher levels. The trade accord reached at Trump’s Scottish golf club in July 2025 outlined terms where the EU would eliminate tariffs on American industrial goods, while the United States would limit tariffs on most products to 15 percent. Negotiations between EU lawmakers and governments on legislation to implement the deal concluded Wednesday without reaching an agreement. The European Commission, which handles trade negotiations for the bloc’s 27 member states, has not yet passed the required enabling legislation. Trump previously threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on European automakers if the EU fails to enact the transatlantic trade agreement.
