A Grimaldi Euromed-owned car carrier has lost propulsion due to a fire in the engine room. The company said that the fire in the engine room of the 2003-built car carrier Grande Roma started around 10 pm local time on October 25, while exiting the English Channel. The crew of the Italian-flagged 5,379 ceu vessel discharged CO2 into the engine room and began bulkhead cooling. The master reported that there were no injuries and no pollution as a result of the incident, but as the vessel was without propulsion, it requested the owner’s emergency team to contract a suitable tug. The Emanuele Grimaldi-controlled company hired the Abeille Liberté tug, which connected a tow at approximately 9:36 am on October 26, with an expected arrival at the Port of Le Havre on October 27. The vessel’s owner also arranged all required assistance for the crew, vessel, and cargo. The latest available AIS data shows that the vessel is not under command and is heading towards the port of Le Havre. It is currently located in the Baie de la Seine, north of Caen.
