Image Credit: IMO The IMO ’s Research and Development Forum has examined how the growing use of alternative marine fuels could change pollution-response requirements. Held on September 21-22 in Singapore , the forum brought together regulators, scientists, industry representatives and emergency responders to discuss preparedness for incidents involving newer marine fuels. Hosted by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore , with support from China , the event covered LNG, LPG, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels and e-fuels. Discussions focused on how the different properties of these fuels could affect spill behaviour and response strategies. Participants also looked at spill modelling, risk assessment, emergency response, post-spill actions and international cooperation. The forum included expert presentations, case studies, panel discussions and working sessions, allowing participants to share research and operational experience. A key theme was the need for closer cooperation between governments, industry, academia and the scientific community to address knowledge gaps and improve preparedness before major incidents occur.
