The incident As explained, on December 29, 2024, about 1934 local time, the towing vessel and bulk carrier collided while underway on the Lower Mississippi River at mile 122, near Luling, Louisiana. The towing vessel sank, forcing all five crewmembers to abandon the vessel into the water. A sheen of diesel fuel was visible downriver. The crew of the towing vessel were rescued by a nearby vessel; four crewmembers sustained minor injuries. The towing vessel was considered a total constructive loss valued at over $2.3 million. The bulk carrier sustained minor damage to its hull, estimated at $250,000 to repair.
