SAAM Towage will add the SAAM Hunabku to its fleet as part of its fleet renewal programme in the Americas. The tug will operate at Puerto Quetzal, becoming the first IMO Tier III tugboat in Guatemala. Built by Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey, the vessel is the 16th tug delivered by the shipbuilder to SAAM Towage. The IMO Tier III certification means the tug’s engines meet the highest international standards for nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, supporting more environmentally friendly port operations. Pablo Cáceres, Manager of Innovation and New Construction at SAAM Towage, said the new tug marks another step in the company’s sustainability strategy and strengthens its long-standing partnership with Sanmar. The Boğaçay-class tug is based on Robert Allan’s RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design. It is 24.4 metres long and 12 metres wide. The vessel can reach speeds of 12.5 knots and delivers more than 80 tonnes of bollard pull. The tug is powered by two CAT 3516E engines and features dual azimuth (Z-drive) propulsion, a FiFi-1 firefighting system, and accommodation for up to seven crew members.
