ABS and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) have launched a joint development project for a U.S.-flagged oil and chemical tanker. The project will focus on the design of a 50,000 dwt vessel. Under the agreement, ABS will review the tanker design to ensure compliance with ABS Rules and U.S. Coast Guard requirements. The partners aim to develop a safe and compliant vessel for the U.S. market. Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at ABS, said the project reflects the classification society’s commitment to supporting the next generation of U.S.-flagged vessels. He noted that ABS has a long history of supporting tanker development and remains focused on delivering practical solutions with safety at the forefront. HD HHI said the project builds on its extensive experience in designing and constructing 50,000 dwt tankers. Dongjin Lee, Executive Vice President of HD HHI, said the company expects demand for U.S.-flagged vessels to increase as the United States advances shipbuilding revitalization initiatives. He added that HD HHI is working closely with ABS to address U.S. Coast Guard requirements and strengthen its position in the U.S. market.
