Introduction Amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex VI (the Regulations ), which came into force on 1 November 2022, have put in place technical and operational amendments required to ships to improve their energy efficiency in the short term, thereby working towards reaching the IMO’s future greenhouse gas reduction measures. In line with its goal to reduce the carbon intensity of all ships by 40% by 2023 compared to 2008, from 1 January 2023 it will be mandatory for all ships to calculate their attained Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) to measure their energy efficiency – the “technical carbon intensity requirements” [1] - and to initiate the collection of data for the reporting of their annual operational carbon intensity indicator (CII) and CII rating – the “operational carbon intensity requirements” [2] .
