HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with HD Hyundai Avikus to advance autonomous navigation technology. The agreement supports HJSC’s strategy to develop next-generation smart vessels and strengthen its position in the high-value shipbuilding market. The companies signed the MOU on June 4 during Posidonia 2026 in Athens. HJSC CEO Yoo Sang-cheol and HD Hyundai Avikus CEO Kang Jae-ho attended the ceremony. Under the agreement, HJSC will install HD Hyundai Avikus’ HiNAS Control autonomous navigation solution on vessels it develops and builds. The two companies will also expand their technology cooperation. HD Hyundai established Avikus in 2020 to develop autonomous navigation solutions for ships. HiNAS Control is a Level 2 autonomous navigation system for large commercial vessels. The platform uses artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to improve navigation safety and operational efficiency. HD Hyundai Avikus commercialized the system in 2022. Demand for smart ships continues to grow as shipowners seek greater efficiency, safety and digitalization. At the same time, shipbuilders are increasing investment in autonomous vessel technologies. HJSC said the partnership will strengthen its competitiveness in the smart ship sector. The company also aims to accelerate the adoption of autonomous navigation systems and expand its presence in the next-generation vessel market. Autonomous vessels are attracting growing industry interest because they can lower fuel consumption and reduce labor costs. Together, these expenses account for a significant share of vessel operating costs. South Korea’s government and major shipbuilders are actively testing autonomous shipping technologies and collecting operational data to support commercialization. “As ship automation continues to advance, the need to proactively prepare for the future vessel market is becoming increasingly important,” said Yoo Sang-
