China scraps FX risk reserve ratio to lower cost of dollar buying in Daily Currencies Ratings 28/02/2026 China’s central bank announced on Friday it will eliminate the foreign exchange risk reserves for certain forwards contracts, a move that stands to reduce the cost of purchasing dollars. The People’s Bank of China said it would lower the foreign exchange risk reserves for financial institutions when buying foreign exchange through currency forwards to zero from 20%, effective March 2. The decision reverses the PBOC’s September 2022 move to raise the risk reserve requirements, which was implemented to stem the yuan’s rapid losses and capital outflows at that time. The yuan recorded its largest annual gain against the dollar in five years in 2025, strengthening past the 7-per-dollar level, and largely carried over this momentum into the new year.
