Image Credit: Baker Hughes Energy technology firm Baker Hughes has received type approval certification from classification society RINA for its NovaLT 16 gas turbine technology for marine propulsion applications. The approval covers operation on natural gas and up to 100% hydrogen, the companies announced at Posidonia 2026 in Athens , Baker Hughes said in a statement on its website on Thursday . The certification follows a maritime validation process designed to ensure the turbine meets onboard installation and operational requirements. Originally developed for industrial power generation, the NovaLT turbine family offers output of 12-17 MW in simple-cycle operation and up to 22 MW in combined-cycle applications. Baker Hughes said the technology combines a compact design, high efficiency and operational flexibility. As shipping explores lower-carbon propulsion options, gas turbines are attracting interest for their power density and fuel flexibility. Baker Hughes said the NovaLT 16 is designed to support a range of fuels, including hydrogen, helping position the technology as a potential option for future maritime decarbonisation efforts.
