Image Credit: Bound4blue Wind propulsion firm Bound4blue has received type approval design certification from classification society DNV for its largest installed eSAIL wind propulsion system. The approval covers the company's Model 3-24 eSAIL suction sail, confirming it meets DNV's standards for safety and design, it said in an email statement on Tuesday . Two of the sails were installed on Klaveness Combination Carriers ' newbuild vessel MV Baltazar earlier this year . The eSAIL system uses suction to generate aerodynamic lift, producing forward thrust that can reduce engine load and fuel consumption. Bound4blue said the larger sail is designed to provide greater wind-assisted propulsion, helping shipowners reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The company added that the technology can help vessels meet environmental regulations while lowering operating costs. According to the International Windship Association (IWSA) , more than 100 ships are currently equipped with wind propulsion , with tankers and bulk carriers leading the adoption.
