Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to Seatrium Technology & Innovation for its 30 MW Floating Data Center (FDC) concept, supporting the development of offshore digital infrastructure. The approval follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two companies during Singapore Maritime Week 2026 to collaborate on offshore power and digital technologies. Seatrium’s concept is based on a jetty-moored, non-propelled barge equipped with six independent 5 MW “Data-in-a-Box” modules. Each module integrates IT equipment, cooling systems, power distribution and supporting infrastructure within a modular design intended to simplify deployment and expansion. According to Seatrium, the floating data centre is designed to address growing demand for artificial intelligence, cloud computing and edge computing, particularly in coastal areas where land availability and power infrastructure are limited. The concept uses natural seawater cooling, modular construction and offshore siting to improve energy efficiency and scalability. Seatrium is also developing a 100 MW floating data centre based on the same design principles. As part of the AiP process, Bureau Veritas assessed the concept’s technical feasibility against its classification rules, international standards and applicable regulatory requirements. The review covered the general arrangement, cooling systems, stability, marine systems and key safety considerations. Bureau Veritas said early-stage technical assessments help developers identify design risks, establish a pathway towards regulatory compliance and support the commercialisation of new offshore technologies.
