The UK Government has published a revised National Policy Statement for Ports, introducing a stronger presumption in favour of approving Development Consent Orders for nationally significant port infrastructure projects. The updated framework, published by the Department for Transport, is designed to support long-term investment in the UK port sector while recognising ports’ critical role in economic growth, energy security, trade resilience and the clean energy transition. The revised NPS provides greater clarity for port operators and investors, creating the conditions needed to plan and deliver major infrastructure projects with greater certainty. The document specifically acknowledges the growing importance of ports in enabling large-scale renewable energy developments, including floating offshore wind, and recognises that as offshore projects increase in scale, ports will require deeper water access, enhanced heavy-lift capabilities, greater heavy-lift capability and expanded operational space to support deployment. Peel Ports Group welcomed the updated policy framework, with Tom Harrison, Group Strategic Accounts Director, describing the revised NPS as providing the ports industry with real confidence in its long-term future. He highlighted the combination of planning certainty and operational flexibility as enabling operators to plan infrastructure investment years in advance at the point when such investment is most critically needed, allowing capacity to be built in response to actual market demand from offshore wind, project cargo and major construction programmes rather than fixed forecasts. Industry bodies have also welcomed the revised framework, noting its stronger recognition of ports as a foundational industry and its anticipated role in accelerating investment decisions while maintaining appropriate environmental safeguards.
