Peel Ports Group has reinstated a weekly container service from the Port of Greenock to Rotterdam via its BG Freight Line, with calls commencing September 19, providing Scottish exporters with a reliable direct connection to Rotterdam’s extensive global shipping network. The service is operated by the MV BG Emerald and MV BG Jade, alternating on weekly calls, each with a capacity of 1,002 TEUs. The service is positioned as particularly valuable to Scotland’s independent whisky distillers, bottlers and their supply chains, which are operating under significant financial and trading pressure. The weekly frequency provides exporters with a guaranteed departure schedule, eliminating the uncertainty that has historically made exporting a barrier for smaller businesses. Peel Ports also operates bonded warehousing at Greenock, enabling whisky businesses to move bottled stock into storage without immediately paying UK excise duty, holding product in suspension until a sale is secured and the goods are ready to ship, potentially cutting fulfilment times from days to hours. The service also addresses a logistical inefficiency by removing the need to truck containers to ports elsewhere in the UK before export, reducing haulage costs and additional handling from the supply chain. BG Freight has priced the service to match east coast port rates for connections to Rotterdam, making it cost-competitive for Greenock customers. Jamie Strain, Clydeport Port Director at Peel Ports Group, described the service as providing exporters with something simple but critical: the certainty of a weekly vessel ready to take goods in full or part containers from Greenock to global markets via Rotterdam. The Port of Greenock handles approximately 100,000 TEUs annually, and Peel Ports has invested GBP 25 million in two new 72-metre ship-to-shore cranes at the terminal as part of its broader capacity expansion programme.
