Image Credit: Exmar Engine maker WinGD has said its ammonia dual-fuel engine has secured 40 orders across gas carriers, bulkers, tankers and container ships. The company highlighted the milestone following the delivery of Antwerpen , the first ocean-going vessel powered by the engine , it said in an email update on Wednesday. The 46,000 m3 LPG/ammonia carrier was delivered to Belgium-based Exmar after completing sea trials in South Korea . According to WinGD, the engine uses high-pressure ammonia injection with a pilot fuel dose of about 5% at full load. “ Ammonia propulsion is no longer theoretical Carl-Antoine Saverys Because of ammonia's high ignition temperature and low flammability, a small amount of conventional fuel, such as diesel, is needed to initiate combustion. Sea trials showed performance and fuel efficiency comparable to equivalent diesel-fuelled engines in both ammonia and diesel operating modes.
