Image Credit: Anemoi Anemoi Marine Technologies has received approval in principle (AiP) from DNV for a medium-range tanker design that integrates two folding rotor sails. The design was developed through a joint project with Singapore-based tanker owner Hafnia and Chinese shipbuilder Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) , Anemoi said in an email statement on  Tuesday .  The partners said the work was aimed at simplifying the integration of rotor sail wind propulsion technology on MR tankers while addressing technical, operational and safety requirements. The concept features two EX-rated rotor sails designed for use in hazardous areas on tanker decks. Anemoi and GSI also developed a lightweight deck foundation that avoids the need for underdeck strengthening. According to the companies, the project showed the potential for improved vessel energy efficiency while providing shipowners with a verified design that could simplify future installations. DNV reviewed the design, including its treatment under IMO energy efficiency rules, before issuing the AiP. The approval was announced during Posidonia 2026 in Athens and is expected to support wider adoption of wind-assisted propulsion in the tanker sector.
