MMI Daily Iron Ore Index Report March 05 2026 in Chinese iron ore and steelmaking prices 05/03/2026 Today, Dalian iron ore futures exhibited a predominantly sideways, oscillating trend, although the most-traded I2605 contract ultimately closed at 759 RMB per tonne, marking a 1.27% increase from the previous trading session. In the physical market, spot prices increased by 5-7 RMB compared to the prior day. Offering sentiment amongst traders was moderate, while steel mills adopted a cautious stance, resulting in limited enquiries. Consequently, the overall trading atmosphere in the spot market was subdued. With market fundamentals remaining largely unchanged, today’s price increase was driven primarily by macroeconomic factors and specific market news. On the news front, market rumours circulated regarding anticipated supply tightness for certain popular iron ore brands, which reportedly triggered a round of purchasing that supported prices. Furthermore, policy stimulus on the macroeconomic front has generated optimistic market sentiment, contributing to the price rise. However, given that the market remains characterised by a dynamic of strong supply and weak demand, with downside risks to consumption persisting, it is unlikely that sentiment alone can sustain a prolonged price rally. Therefore, it is anticipated that after this current surge, iron ore prices will revert to an oscillating pattern.
