HMM will expand the capacity of its Washington United Terminals (WUT) in the Port of Tacoma after signing a contract with HD Hyundai Samho for the supply of four new port cranes. The project includes the replacement of two quay cranes and the addition of two yard cranes. The upgrade will enable the terminal to handle larger container vessels and increase its annual capacity from 590,000 TEUs to 880,000 TEUs. Located in Washington state, WUT covers approximately 510,000 square metres and features a 793-metre berth. The terminal also has an on-dock rail system capable of handling 26 rail cars simultaneously, supporting inland cargo movements on HMM’s US West Coast services. Under the agreement, HD Hyundai Samho will deliver the project on a turnkey basis, covering the design, manufacturing, transportation, installation and commissioning of the cranes. Delivery is scheduled for 2028. HMM said the investment forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen its port infrastructure and global supply chain network. The company recently signed an agreement with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to support port development at Vadhvan Port in India and is also expanding its TTIA terminal in Algeciras, Spain. An HMM official said the equipment upgrade will improve logistics services for customers while supporting the company’s growing fleet and operational capabilities.
