HMM has reduced its 2030 container fleet capacity target while increasing the number of vessels it plans to operate, signalling a shift towards a more diversified fleet, according to DynaLiners. The South Korean carrier lowered its capacity target from 1.55 million TEUs to 1.47 million TEUs by 2030. At the same time, HMM increased its planned fleet size from 130 to 166 vessels. The revised strategy points to a greater focus on smaller ships. HMM currently operates one of the largest average vessel sizes among major container carriers, at around 10,700 TEUs per ship. The company has also raised its investment plan to KRW 29 trillion (US$19.8 billion). Including both container ships and bulk carriers, HMM expects its fleet to reach 276 vessels. In addition to fleet expansion, the company said it will continue investing in terminals, ports and logistics infrastructure.
