Port of Brisbane has expanded the energy infrastructure at the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal, adding 240kW of rooftop solar and installing a new 1,145kWh battery energy storage system as part of its ongoing energy transition programme. The additions bring total solar capacity at the BICT to in excess of 1MW, complementing the 790kW of onsite solar already in place. The battery storage installation was delivered in partnership with Hydro Tasmania and supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, receiving AUD 240,000 in funding under Round 1 of ARENA’s Community Batteries Program. The project will trial how battery storage can optimise energy use by capturing renewable energy for onsite consumption, improving energy reliability and reducing demand on the grid. Neil Stephens, CEO of Port of Brisbane, described the project as an important step in understanding how battery storage can support more efficient energy management at the terminal, which welcomes approximately 150 cruise ships annually and represents a significant energy consumption site. He noted that the trial will help determine how the port can better manage electricity demand, reduce grid reliance and free up network capacity for broader community use. Port of Brisbane achieved net zero emissions across Scope 1 and 2 categories, with offsets, in FY24 and has maintained that status since. Stephens highlighted the BICT investment as consistent with the port’s long-term Vision 2060, which continues to explore opportunities to expand renewable energy solutions across the broader Port of Brisbane precinct as part of the organisation’s ongoing decarbonisation journey.
