FedEx has expanded its collaboration with robotics company Dexterity by deploying autonomous trailer loading technology at its Hagerstown Hub in Maryland. The deployment marks the next phase of a multi-year partnership. It follows testing and operational validation at an earlier pilot site and brings the technology into a larger production environment. FedEx said trailer loading remains one of the most physically demanding tasks across its parcel network. The company loads tens of thousands of trailers every day in the United States and sees automation as a way to improve safety, consistency and operational performance. The system combines Dexterity’s Foresight physical AI platform with its dual-armed Mech robot. The technology uses vision, depth sensing and touch to make real-time decisions while loading trailers. According to Dexterity, the system can determine how to place parcels for better space utilisation, stability and loading speed under changing operating conditions. FedEx said it is also evaluating how physical AI can support wider hub operations, including trailer assignments, destination planning, maintenance and workforce processes. Kawal Preet, Executive Vice President of Planning, Engineering and Transformation at FedEx, said the deployment supports the company’s strategy to build a safer, smarter and more resilient logistics network. Dexterity Chief Executive Officer Samir Menon said the Hagerstown deployment demonstrates that physical AI can operate reliably in high-volume logistics environments and could serve as a model for future expansion.
