GEODIS has supported the deployment of an offshore energy storage prototype off the coast of Calabria, Italy, by providing engineering for its launch, transport and installation. The project was completed for Sizable Energy at the Natural Ocean Engineering Laboratory (NOEL), one of Italy’s main offshore testing sites for marine energy technologies. The prototype is designed to store electricity generated by offshore wind farms and other renewable sources. It can release the stored energy back into the grid when demand increases. The technology aims to improve grid stability and provide an alternative to battery energy storage systems. GEODIS developed the engineering for the launch, towing and installation of the offshore tank. The company also prepared lifting calculations, crane positioning, lifting plans, rigging design, towing procedures and mooring operations. Its team supervised the work on site. The offshore reservoir measures 50 metres in diameter and weighs around 11 tonnes. A 350-tonne crane was used to launch the structure into the sea. “This project demonstrates our ability to support innovative technologies beyond transportation,” said Nicolas Bonnier, Global Manager Offshore Wind Solutions, Project Logistics at GEODIS. “Our offshore engineering expertise helps customers turn complex concepts into safe and reliable operational solutions.” GEODIS said the project is its first offshore energy storage reference and strengthens its position in the growing offshore renewable energy sector.
