Image Credit: ABS Classification society ABS has granted approval in principle (AiP) for a battery-hybrid container ship design. The project was developed jointly with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) , ABS said in a press release issued on its website on Tuesday . The AiP, presented at Posidonia 2026 , covers the electrical analysis and electrical design of a proposed 16,000-TEU  capacity container ship equipped with a battery hybrid system. ABS said it completed design reviews based on class requirements as part of the joint development project. “This AIP marks another important milestone in our ongoing work with KSOE and HD HHI to advance hybrid electrical systems for large commercial vessels,” Joshua Divin , Senior Vice President, Marine Business Development at ABS, said. While battery systems are already widely used on vessels operating shorter voyages, such as tugs and ferries, the project seeks to apply the technology to much larger ships.
