Image Credit: DNV DNV has approved the design of an LPG dual-fuel 1,400 TEU feeder container ship of South Korea ’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) . The approval in principle was presented at the Posidonia trade fair, DNV said in a press release on its website on Thursday. HHI said the design is intended for the smaller container ship segment, offering LPG as an alternative fuel option. LPG remains a niche alternative bunker fuel for now, being used almost exclusively in gas carriers. The global LPG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 168 ships , with 112 more expected to be delivered by 2028 , according to classification society DNV data. Of the current fleet, 158 ships are LPG carriers. The concept uses an arrangement similar to LNG fuel systems to reduce technical risk while maintaining operational reliability. The vessel features a forward accommodation layout to maximise cargo capacity, while the LPG storage tank, fuel supply system and bunkering station are located on the aft open deck. The design also incorporates a composite boiler with an LPG gas combustion unit to manage boil-off gas. DNV said the concept provides smaller container ship operators with a practical pathway to lower emissions while preserving flexibility for future fuel transitions.
