Kalmar and APM Terminals have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the development of next-generation terminal technology and improve automated terminal operations. The collaboration focuses on two main areas. First, the companies will jointly develop the Kalmar One automation platform. They will also work together on deploying the software at existing and future terminals. Second, the partners will align their product roadmaps. APM Terminals will contribute its operational expertise to help further develop the Kalmar One automation system and better meet the needs of automated container terminals. The partnership will also support the development of an Automation as a Service approach, creating shared value for both companies. APM Terminals already uses the Kalmar One platform at its Pier 400 terminal in Los Angeles, the largest container terminal in the Western Hemisphere. Hans Jacobs, Head of Operational Technology & Analytics at APM Terminals, said the partnership combines Kalmar’s technology with APM Terminals’ operational expertise to develop safer, more adaptable and more efficient automation solutions. Juuso Kanner, Vice President of Automation at Kalmar, described the agreement as an industry first. He said it will help APM Terminals reduce complexity by using a common automation platform across its automated terminals. He added that all current and future Kalmar One customers will benefit from the improvements developed through the partnership.
