File Image / Pixabay A bill introduced in the New York State Senate would require state-funded ferries operating in the state to transition to zero-emission operation. The legislation, introduced by Senator Brian Kavanagh , would require all ferries purchased by the state, agencies or public authorities from fiscal year 2028 onwards to produce zero emissions, according to the bill introduced on Friday . Privately licensed ferries receiving state subsidies for specific routes would also need to purchase zero or near-zero-emission vessels. The bill also proposes that such ferries operating in New York waters achieve zero-emission operation by 2042 , although conventional fuelled marine engines could still be used as range extenders. It would additionally direct the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to study charging infrastructure needed to support zero-emission tugboats and other workboats along the Hudson River and New York State Canal System . The bill is currently in committee in the Senate. As per the legislative process, it would need approval from both the Senate and Assembly before being sent to the governor for signature.
