Offshore drilling contractor Transocean has won a 365-day contract extension in the US Gulf of Mexico worth $195m for the 2014-built ultra-deepwater drillship Deepwater Asgard. Transocean did not disclose the name of the client and only referred to it as “an independent operator”. The total contract value of $195m includes a $10.9m lump sum payment, which is not included in the estimated backlog of approximately $184m. The offshore driller did say that this new contract was expected to begin in June 2024 in direct continuation of the rig’s current deal and that it includes additional services. With that in mind, the contract for the drillship was most probably awarded by Hess as it is currently on a one-year deal with the oil and gas player.
